ABOUT THE NINGALOO

Cape Range National Park

The Cape Range National Park presents spectacular vistas with rugged ranges, magnificent canyons and 50 km of pristine white beaches. The park covers 50,831 hectares and is only 35 km from the centre of Exmouth.

The Cape range is the "backbone" of the cape and is the remains of an ancient sea floor, thrust upwards by movements in the earth's crust. Wildlife is abundant with a variety of birds, emus, euros and red kangaroos roaming free. It is also the home of the rare black footed rock wallaby. In ancient times the range was isolated as rising sea levels inundated lower lying areas. As a result, some species of plants and animals are endemic to the area, including the red centred variety of the Sturt Desert Pea. More than 630 species of flowering plants and over 400 caves are catalogued in the area.

One of the highlights of the park is Yardie Creek where deep blue water lies imprisoned between the vertical cliffs, creating an atmosphere of tranquility, sublime isolation and magic.

The Cape Range offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors interested in the natural environment. Recreational activities include walking, camping, canoeing, picnicking, photography and simply observing the awesome landscape.
